Murder Investigation Moves to Landfill Site 9/2/2010 |

A landfill site in Bracebridge is the site of an OPP investigation in connection with the murder of a Bracebridge woman. The remains of 32 year-old Samantha Collins were discovered at a different location at a property on Wood Lake earlier in the summer, but police say the search at Rosewarne is connected with this case.
OPP would only say they are looking for evidence in connection with the homicide of Collins.

Last Section of Four Laning on Hwy 11 Underway 9/2/2010 |

Travelers who regularly use Highway 11 Northbound will be happy to hear that the end of the four laning to North Bay is in sight. According to a story in yesterday's Almaguin News, the 33 million dollar contract to finish the last 17 kilometers of Highway has been awarded to Aecon Construction. The final contract includes the paving and completion of the by-pass around South River and Sundridge. Work has already begun and is expected to be completed by next fall.

Greaves Denies Story on Naming New Rink 9/1/2010 |

Huntsville Councillor Mike Greaves denies stories that he would present a name for the new Olympic-sized ice surface for council to consider. At Mondays meeting Greaves says the naming should be a public process, although he did give a brief history of the original naming of the property on which the new structure sits. The word Memorial kept re-surfacing as the land was given in memory of the soldiers who died in World War One. Greaves says the word memorial has disappeared from the names that identify the various facilities that now sit on the original property.

Dead Man was Murdered 9/1/2010 |

Bracebridge OPP say the body found yesterday morning was the victim of a homicide.
The body of a white male was found during the night by a fisherman near a boat launch on Morrow Lake.
A post mortem is being conducted today in Toronto.

Empire Coming Down Soon 9/1/2010 |

The Empire Hotel will be coming down soon. The owner of the property, Doug Keays, sent a letter to the Town of Huntsville advising that he plans to demolish whats left of the building in the next three weeks. Keays says the building will be dismantled by hand to mitigate potentially dangerous situations.
Keays says the sidewalks adjacent to the Empire will have to be closed for several days while the demolition is finished. Much of the building has already been taken down. The future of the Empire Block and suggestions for redevelopment will be part of a Community Improvement Plan now in development. The plan will be presented to council this Fall.
